How to append avi files

A lot of files on the internet have been split up for more convenient uploading. Sometimes the uploader does not use a program like HJSplit but actually splits the file into several watchable avi files. Usually you’d want to put them back together as soon as you’ve downloaded it. This article tells you how to do that.

Open virtualdub and open the first file. Go to the file menu again and select “Append avi file”. The second part will be added after the first automatically. If your files are sequentially numbered (e.g. file1, file2.avi) virtualdub will continue to append video until the end of the numbering is reached.

Now set both the Video and the Audio menu to Direct Stream Copy and go to the File menu: Save As. If you wish you can set compression options on full processing mode instead.

Unfortunately, appending files will sometimes give you a few problems. Most of them will be solved if you re-encode the video and audio to ONE single format. There are some that are stubborn though.
I’ve made guides to solve a few of them:
- How to convert audio sampling rate
- How to append unequally cut files
