Unemployed sleeping in internet cafés

Ran into a few articles about unemployed in Japan sleeping in internet café’s after being laid off and thrown from their corporately sponsored houses. Wth! Both Japan and the Netherlands have similar unemployment rates now, around 5%. The difference is, I’m not hearing about people having to sleep outside because of it. It’s been in the news since ages, but still. I still remember the blue tents from the last time I visited. Stats. Don’t let me whop out these because I swear I’m going to cry. I ies visiting a third world country.

Computer engineer Barbie

For the record: I don’t have any opinion on it, other than it made me LAUGH SO HARD I NEARLY DIED.

“All the girls who imagine their futures through Barbie will learn that engineers – like girls – are free to explore infinite possibilities, limited only by their imagination,” says Nora Lin, President, Society of Women Engineers. “As a computer engineer, Barbie will show girls that women can turn their ideas into realities that have a direct and positive impact on people’s everyday lives in this exciting and rewarding career.”

HEY LADY, engineer is not the same as wanting to be an astronaut! Though, come to think of it, it does have something to do with the infinite universe and beyond, only the Information Technology one, is…

*drumrolls*

You know the abbreviations by nao: FOF and FOS.

Thumbs up for this one ♥:

NAO YOU, CAN HAS JUST AS MUCH FUN AS I DO BY HAVING A DIRECT POSITIVE INFLUENCE ON PEOPLE BY ADMINISTERING LIGHT PAIN AND SADISM. I’ll see you gals in lolcat hospital. Besides that, I’d like to see Barbie lift the 6 kilogram motherfucker I drag to work every day. Sorry Barbie, but the boss will give you what the boss will give you, and it isn’t a 300 gram netbook.

Cuz I should have been a dentist.

The new way of studying

I just read this at arama and got reminded about the topic because it was already a hot topic when I was attending school. I simply have to say: studying has changed. You might want to change the way you quiz students. Just an idea. By all means, the motto in information sciences was “duplicate et inferte” (copy/paste). Why should you reinvent the wheel if it’s already there? The future is not about rediscovering old truths but succesfully mining into a great wealth of information to create a new and better “product”, whatever that may be. Your teacher would call you absolutely stupid if you’d ignore the great minds of the past and try to find the answer yourself (again), I can tell you that much. It’s a complaint only vocalized by people that don’t live in this day and age as far as I’m concerned. I actually had customers go “angry” on me when they found out I was googling the answer to their problems. They would say “Hey, you studied for this and you should know all this”. Oh heck yes, I’m probably 10 times smarter but my head doesn’t have that kind of room. The new skill is how to get to your solutions, your answers quickly and effectively. It is outdated to combat ‘copy / paste’ asif it’s something evil. It just means you have to challenge your students more because the information at their disposal is a lot richer. And guess what? You’re students are probably more apt at tapping into those sources than you are (as a teacher).  As for cultural differences in studying: how the heck did I do all this asleep and within 4 hours of a day is a mystery to me. If you can’t do it within four, you’re doing something wrong. That includes the classes you take and skip. And I sit at my place of h00min observation because people think I need that much time in a day to be productive. Anything after four hours is just dealing with h00min failure, you know. It can actually be that way up until 80% of your time.
